Liam Kennedy believes that Newcastle United are closer to winning a piece of silverware than some may think.

Newcastle have not won a meaningful piece of silverware since 1955 which makes cup competitions very important on Tyneside and with Eddie Howe vowing to take them seriously, they could indeed bring that wait to an end this season.

The Magpies are just one win away from making the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup as they face Bournemouth on December 20 and while some may think they have little chance given the clubs still left in the competition, Kennedy doesn’t feel the same.

The journalist has claimed on the NUFC Matters YouTube channel that Newcastle are close to being a side ready to win silverware under PIF.

“Maybe not two years but I think within the next five years you’ll see a player in a black and white shirt with silverware over their head and that will be a really proud moment for so many people in this area and I think it’s closer than many people think.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s hunt for silverware…

It certainly would mean a lot for the fans of Newcastle who’ve gone through a lot over the last few years, especially under the ownership of Mike Ashley, so if PIF and Howe can deliver a trophy it would cap off what’s been a miraculous turnaround.

While the Magpies have been performing well in the Premier League sitting third in the table, but most Newcastle fans would likely take winning some silverware over Champions League football to end their years of hurt in cup competitions.

Given the increased squad depth the Magpies now have after splashing out over £200 million in less than 12 months and with no European football to distract them, Howe will see this as a great time to try and deliver a trophy.
