Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has lauded attendance as “sign of the times” at Newcastle United.
Newcastle recorded an attendance of 34,596 for their friendly win against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.
Goals from Sean Longstaff and Chris Wood won the game for the Magpies which will leave Eddie Howe and their fans happy as they carry that winning feeling into the EFL Cup tie against Bournemouth next week.
Newcastle won seven of their last eight games in the Premier League before the World Cup break as they sit third in the table, the Vallecano and Al-Hilal result shows that winning feeling and mentality has remained within the squad during the break which the fans are reveling in.
Downie was at St James’ Park for the Vallecano clash where he tweeted about the crowd and looking ahead to the upcoming home game next week.
“Looks like at least 35,000 inside St James’ Park for this friendly today. Stadium sold out already for visit of Bournemouth in the Cup on Tuesday, too. Sign of the times at #NUFC”
TIF Thoughts on Downie’s comment…
Newcastle fans turn out on Saturday showed just the excitement and happiness around the club’s position at the moment with the World Cup break not halting their momentum on or off the pitch.
The Magpies’ faithful have been through it all in recent years under Mike Ashley but the form this season under the new Saudi Arabian ownership is giving those starved of success something to be proud of, which they are showing at every given opportunity.
A return to domestic action in the week against Bournemouth will surely see St James’ Park rocking as they are presented with a great opportunity to win their first domestic trophy since the 1955 FA Cup, with them one of the favourites to go all the way.
