Newcastle United are now unlikely to make a move for James Maddison in the January transfer window.

This has been suggested by reliable Toon journalist Craig Hope, who has been speaking on his latest YouTube video following their Boxing Day victory.

There has now been a long-standing interest in the Englishman from the Magpies, with the Tyneside club reportedly lodging two bids in the summer for the midfielder.

Which of these United States stars has been linked with the Toon recently?

And there has been speculation suggesting the Toon could make a move for him in the upcoming January window following their sensational start to the 2022/23 campaign.

However, Hope now believes a move for the 25-year-old in January is highly unlikely due to the figure which would be required to bring in a player of Maddison’s standard.

He said: “My information on Maddison is that because he’s probably going to cost what would be a premium in January, that’s just not the market Newcastle are in.”

TIF Thoughts on Craig Hope’s comments…

This will likely come as a frustration to many Newcastle fans, who may feel bringing Maddison in over the January window could prove to be a big boost in their Champions League push.

Do you expect NUFC to eventually sign Maddison?

The England midfielder has been one of the standout midfielders in the Premier League this season having already provided a return of seven goals and four assists (via Transfermarkt).

However, whether a move in January was even on the cards remains to be seen, with some reports claiming Maddison has his eyes set on playing Champions League football for next season.

And although Newcastle have made an incredible start to the campaign, there is still a long way to go.

The truth is that Leicester won’t sell Maddison in January unless the Saudis offer silly money (£80m+). They could still be in a relegation battle and relegation would be a, possibly terminal, financial catastrophe
