Newcastle United have previously made a move for James Maddison and he has excited some on Tyneside with his recent comments from the England camp.

However, Sky Sports’ Toon reporter, Keith Downie, has insisted bringing the midfielder to St. James Park in January will be incredibly difficult.

Over the summer transfer window, it was claimed the Magpies had the 25-year-old on their radar with two bids believed to have been submitted to Leicester City.

Which of these United States stars has been linked with the Toon recently?

And since the reports over the summer, Maddison has since spoken about discussions with some of the current Toon side about the transfer speculation.

But when Downie spoke to Newcastle Fans TV, the Sky Sports man has insisted a move for the midfielder in January would be a difficult deal for the Toon to pull off:

He said: “I think Maddison will be difficult. I just think with it being January, I think it’d be a difficult one to do in January. Obviously, he made those comments yesterday [Monday], I think, or a day before and it’s got everyone kind of getting a little bit excited.

“When fans come up to me and ask me, the one thing they ask me [is], ‘Maddison, Maddison, is Maddison coming?’ Obviously, Newcastle went in for him in the summer. My understanding was that they kind of got led down the path a little bit.”

TIF Thoughts on Downie’s comments…

This will likely not be the news many Toon fans will have been wanting to hear given the sensational form Maddison has shown this season.

Do you still want Maddison at Newcastle?

The England international has already netted seven goals and provided four assists in the Premier League which is a return that would certainly provide a boost to Newcastle’s European charge.

However, with the midfielder believed to be wanting to play Champions League football next season, surely this only adds to the list of reasons Newcastle will be pushing for a spot in the top four.
