Journalist Craig Hope has given his verdict on Newcastle United’s links to Borussia Monchengladbach star Marcus Thuram.

Speaking in his most recent press conference Eddie Howe said he ‘watched’ the player at the World Cup, but added no further than that.

The Magpies have been linked with an interest in Thuram, it turns out that the Bundesliga star is very good friends with Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin. Perhaps it could be a factor that leads to the Toon adding another Frenchman to their ranks.

Hope labelled Thuram as ‘one to watch’ in the January window, but doesn’t think the position he plays is a ‘definite priority’ at the moment.

He stated on his YouTube channel (2:51), “I know that Newcastle have watched him [Marcus Thuram] previously, he was certainly a name that was put to me back in the January window. So yeah, one to watch there but I wouldn’t necessarily think that that position was a definite priority for the time being.”

TIF’s view on Hope’s comments…

We believe that Thuram would be a welcome addition into the Newcastle side, he could bolster their wide options it’s a position he’s played in the past.

One report claims that Gladbach would be willing to let the player go for around €10million (£8.6 million) in January, this is due to the fact his contract runs out with the German side in the summer of 2023.

The Toon’s current wide options of Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron have been exceptional this season, but they could do with better options to compete with them.

Newcastle has Ryan Fraser and Jacob Murphy at their disposal, but both wingers have failed to score 10 goals for the club since they arrived.

As for Thuram he’s had an impressive campaign in the Bundesliga, he has 10 goals and three assists for Gladbach in 15 appearances. The Magpies have an opportunity to bring in an impressive star for a cheap fee, they should do all they can to bring him to Tyneside.
