Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has given his verdict on Manchester United transfer target Cody Gakpo.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Romano claimed that the player is a ‘serious option’ and that the club are ‘in contact with agents’ over his services.

90Min.com reported that Man United wanted to sign Gakpo in the summer, but they’re still keen to make the deal happen in January.

Ahead of the World Cup the 23-year-old was linked with a move to Real Madrid according to The Athletic. Fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur are also said to be scouting the player per ESPN.

Romano stated, “At the moment, he’s a serious option. Manchester United are working on it. They are in contact with his agents.”

TIF’s view on Romano’s comments…

We believe that Gakpo would be a top signing for Manchester United, his stats this season have been phenomenal in the 2022/23 campaign.

The 23-year-old has 21 goal contributions this season in 12 Eredivisie matches with PSV Eindhoven and netted three times in five World Cup appearances.

Gakpo is one of the best finishers and assisters in Europe from the last year. When compared to other attacking midfielders and wingers from Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, the Dutchman is in the top 1% for non-penalty goals and assists (FBref).

Man United will be attracted the fact that Gakpo can operate in a few different attacking positions, he tends to play out on the left wing, but can also play as a right winger and a striker. The Red Devils need more central strikers down the middle, this could see Erik ten-Hag attempt to play him in that position.
