Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United are still in ‘discussions’ over handing David de Gea a new contract extension.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that senior players such as Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot and Fred would all see their current deals extended by a year.

However, their Spanish goalkeeper’s name was not included. De Gea will see his deal expire in the summer and so Manchester United have to act fast if they want to hold on to him.

While speaking about it on his YouTube channel, Romano explained that the 32-year-old could yet stay with the club for the long term but ‘discussions with his agents’ are still ongoing.

He said: “De Gea is out of contract in the summer. At the moment, Man United have not triggered the clause for David de Gea.

“But it’s important to say that they are in discussions with his agents. There are negotiations ongoing on the contract side, so De Gea has a chance to stay with a long contract at Man United, but [it] depends on the negotiations.”

TIF Thoughts on David de Gea and MUFC…

De Gea is still very much the undisputed No 1 at Manchester United having started every Premier League and Europa League game so far this season for the Red Devils.

However, his form in recent times has been called into question and there are some doubts about how his lack of ability with the ball at his feet could make him an awkward fit for Erik ten Hag’s tactics.

Still, it certainly sounds as if the door isn’t yet closed on his future with the club, so it will be interesting to see if a new contract agreement can be settled upon in the coming weeks. If not, it seems the Spaniard will likely be off in the near future.
