Gary Neville has backed Harry Maguire to gain confidence from his World Cup performances and turn his Manchester United career around.

Maguire has been imperative to Gareth Southgate in this World Cup, with the defender receiving a 7.6 match rating from Sofascore in the 0-0 draw against the United States.

And former Red Devils full-back Neville praised the form of the £80m centre-back in Qatar and feels it lines him up to transform his Old Trafford fortunes.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “United is a very unforgiving place. I know that from being there for 20 years. If you just don’t get it right, and if something’s not right, that place can eat you alive, it really can.

“And Harry’s just getting that at this moment in time, but I think he’ll come through it at United.

“I don’t think Marcus Rashford or Harry Maguire, when they come out of this tournament, will feel fazed anymore, or lacking in confidence anymore.

“I went through it [poor form] at the age of 23, 24.

“But I came out the other side of it and felt sort of bulletproof ever since, and that’s what I think Harry and Marcus will feel when they go back to United.”

TIF Thoughts on Maguire’s future…

The 29-year-old has welcomed the international break again as he continues to perform for England amid his struggles at United, with him only featuring in 141 minutes of league action under Erik ten Hag.

With the arrival and subsequent form of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, the captain has lost his place, but this tournament will surely have captured Ten Hag’s attention and left Maguire in good stead to return to Manchester and revitalise his club career.
