Former footballer Ally McCoist has said that Manchester United target Cody Gakpo isn’t the finished article, despite his dazzling performances in the World Cup.

The Dutchman has bagged in all three World Cup group games as well as registering 13 goals and 17 assists in all competitions for PSV Eindhoven so far this season.

Unsurprisingly, it’s led to renewed reported interest from the Red Devils (as per Fabrizio Romano), who were unable to sign him in the summer.

With Cristiano Ronaldo departing Old Trafford, you would imagine a forward is on the January list for Erik ten Hag, but Sky Sports commentator McCoist suggested Gakpo is still capable of improving.

Speaking on TalkSport, he said: “I don’t think he’s the finished article by any stretch of the imagination. He’s not a young boy either, I think he’s 23.

“He is really talented, and I can understand there have been a clamour of clubs after him, and I definitely think that there’s improvement in him and it would not be a bad signing.”

TIF Thoughts on McCoist’s comments…

Gakpo is quickly becoming the man of the moment, with his performances in Qatar raising his already vast profile after his scintillating start to the campaign in the Dutch top flight.

It’s no surprise to see him linked with United with Ten Hag at the helm, but it’s questionable whether he would actually fill the void left by Ronaldo.

Despite the Portuguese only scoring once in the Premier League, the 23-year-old’s preferred position is out wide rather than as an orthodox number nine – a position that United are well-stocked in.

It could turn out to be a masterstroke to bring him in and potentially mould him into a more rounded talent.
