Journalist Josh Bunting has given his verdict on Riyad Mahrez following Manchester City’s Carabao Cup win against Liverpool.
Bunting took to Twitter after the Algerian put City 2-1 ahead in 47th minute, he described the player as ‘sensational’ and ‘magnificent’.
Mahrez would bring the ball under control just inside the penalty box, cut in and then strike the ball beautifully into the bottom left corner.
The clash would finish 3-2 to Man City thanks to a header from Nathan Ake, Pep Guardiola’s side will travel to Southampton in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Bunting said, ‘Riyad Mahrez that is just sensational, it’s beautiful the first touch is magnificent it’s the difference. Andy Robertson isn’t tight enough and Mahrez just bends the ball into the bottom corner for 2-1. Looks so simple but the finer details are excellent’.
TIF’s view on Bunting’s comments…
We believe that it was an excellent bit of play from Mahrez, to bring the ball down and then cut in and shot so quickly was truly incredible.
Over the 90 minutes, City deserved to go through to the next round they had more possession, more shots on target and more clear-cut chances. Liverpool, however, were very clinical in front of goal having two shots on target and both resulted in goals.
Judging by their league form Southampton will be seen as a very winnable game for Man City. The Saints are 19th in the Premier League and only two sides have let in more goals than their tally of 27.
Additionally, it’s an opportunity for Guardiola to add another trophy to his enormous resume, he’s already won the League Cup on four different occasions.
Not winning the league could be a serious possibility for City, they’re currently second and five points adrift of Arsenal. This may lead to there being extra focus and intensity on winning the Carabao Cup, so that the club don’t go this season completely trophyless.
