Journalist Pete O’Rourke believes that Victor Orta will now seek to unearth another hidden gem at Leeds United after missing out on Cody Gakpo.

O’Rourke was speaking ahead of the January transfer window with Leeds needing to strengthen their squad in order to retain their Premier League status.

The Whites are currently in 15th place and just two points above the relegation zone albeit with a game in hand on the sides below them.

Gakpo has revealed that he turned down the chance to join the West Yorkshire club in the summer (NRC) and that he would consider a move to rivals Manchester United instead.

Orta will now have to divert his attention elsewhere, and O’Rourke believes that he will be focused on finding an alternative.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, he said: “Obviously, for Leeds, it does give them a bit of confidence that they are looking at the right players who have huge potential to become big, big players in the future.

“Victor Orta is very well renowned in the transfer market and I’m sure he will have plans in place to see if Leeds can find another gem or maybe try and unearth the next potential top player that could come to Elland Road and make a real name for himself.”

According to reports in Spain, Leeds are interested in bringing Matheus Cunha to the club when the market reopens.

Hailed as having ‘something special’ by his former manager Bruno Labbadia, Cunha offers an attacking threat, having averaged a goal or an assist every 117 minutes during his time at Atletico Madrid.

However, the same source suggests that Wolves are leading the race to secure his signature in what could be another transfer blow, so it will be interesting to see who Orta is able to attract this winter.
