Liverpool are interested in Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus, according to Dean Jones.

Kudus’ performances have caught the eye of Liverpool following his two goals in three games for Ghana in Qatar, leaving him a surprise target at Anfield.

The 22-year-old has struggled to nail down a regular place in Alfred Schreuder’s Ajax side this season, having started just five Eredivisie games, despite scoring 10 and assisting two in all competitions – which includes a goal at the Kop end in the Champions League.

His goal haul this season is already a vastly better return than in his injury-hit 2021/22 campaign which produced just six goals and one assist.

According to Jones, his progress this season has earned him admirers at Anfield, with Liverpool keeping an eye on him should there be an opportunity to add an extra body to the squad, rather than seeing him as an alternative to Jude Bellingham.

Writing for GiveMeSport, he said: “With Ajax and Ghana, Kudus is earning admirers, and Liverpool have an eye on him. He is not really the Bellingham alternative, but he is an alternative for the midfield.

“He has great ball-carrying traits and can work hard as a box-to-box midfielder, yet it is expected he will become more of an advanced player that thrives in the attacking third.

“Definitely keep an eye on him from a Liverpool point of view, but this one might be an extra addition if it ends up taking shape.”

TIF Thoughts on Kudus interest…

The Ghanaian certainly is an interesting option that’s emerged for Jurgen Klopp. Kudus previously revealed he was close to joining neighbours Everton in the summer but opted to remain in Amsterdam, and a potential move to the Reds will surely crush any hope the Toffees had of reviving a deal.

He’s an extremely versatile player who is capable of being deployed in an attacking-midfield role despite playing the majority of his minutes as a centre-forward for Ajax. He also played on the right wing during Ghana’s 3-2 win over South Korea which saw him bag twice.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that he is only touted as more of an alternative squad option, but we believe he is a player who would fit seamlessly into Klopp’s system, with Kudus’ 0.99 tackles per 90 ranking among the top 15% of forwards (as per FBref), showing his pressing and aggressive play.

Despite his sporadic playing time, he’s also in the top 8% for goals scored for forwards outside the top five leagues with 0.62 and in the top 1% for pass completion and dribbles completed, proving he’s an all-round monster.
