Presenter Conor McGilligan has warned that it will be a ‘damning statement’ if Leeds United miss out on Matheus Cunha to a close domestic rival.

Over the past few weeks, the Atletico Madrid and Brazil star has been strongly linked with a possible move to a number of different Premier League teams ahead of the January transfer window.

Amongst those clubs, Leeds have certainly been named in the mix, but as things stand, it looks as though Wolves are most likely to land the player. Indeed, as reported by BBC Sport, they have reached a verbal agreement for a loan deal that includes an obligation to buy at the end of the season for a fee that could rise to €40m (£35m).

Amid all the rumours surrounding Cunha, McGilligan has explained that it would be disappointing if the Whites missed out on a deal, particularly if the player joins a domestic rival instead.

Speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, he said: “If we are to miss out [on] Matheus Cunha to a team like Wolverhampton Wanderers, I think that’d be a bit of a damning statement.

“And clearly, with the appointment of [Julen] Lopetegui at Wolves, that is maybe a little bit more of an attractive prospect for Matheus Cunha.

“So a little bit damning for Leeds United if that was to get done. If we are to miss out to a Chelsea and Arsenal, what can you do about it? We can’t compete at the minute with those sorts of sides.”

TIF Thoughts on Matheus Cunha and Leeds United…

As mentioned by McGilligan, Cunha is a possible target for Arsenal, while Chelsea could also make a move for him this winter. These two teams are at the top end of the league table, so it would be more understandable if Leeds lost out on a transfer to them.

However, Wolves are currently bottom of the division and may well end up being a relegation rival for the Whites as the season progresses. With that in mind, it’s easy to see why some fans would then be frustrated to see the Brazilian end up at Molineux instead of Elland Road.

It does seem quite likely that Leeds will miss out on this deal, and having missed out on Cody Gakpo last summer, this could be another frustrating transfer window for the club.

But January isn’t here just yet and so perhaps the Premier League outfit will spring an exciting surprise of their own.
