Leeds United may have a boost in their pursuit of Raphael Guerreiro after Borussia Dortmund confirmed a defensive summer signing, according to Dean Jones.
Leeds are fond admirers of Guerreiro who becomes a free agent in the summer as he looks set to run down his contract at Dortmund.
However, Jones previously reported that the Whites were thought to have been concerned over their chances of bringing in the Portuguese left-back because of their league position.
But since BVB secured the pre-contract signing of left-back Ramy Bensebaini from Borussia Monchengladbach, it’s all but confirmed Guerreiro’s exit.
Jones now believes that Leeds’ chances have been improved and told This Is Futbol that a summer move could be back on.
“Guerreiro plays like 90% of the time at Dortmund at the moment, they’re going to need him for the rest of this season, but if they’re looking longer term, then perhaps it does improve their chances,” Jones said.
TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…
It would be a massive coup for the Whites if they were able to convince Guerreiro to sign, and with Bensebaini arriving at Dortmund, it seems almost inevitable that the 28-year-old will move on at the end of the season.
The versatile left-back has played 18 times for Edin Terzic’s side this season and only failed to feature when he was injured, this will surely rule out any January move with BVB not interested in losing a key player and a solution has already been arranged at the end of the season.
However, the glaring doubt will be whether Guerreiro sees his next step from regular Champions League to relegation battling Leeds, and with him registering three goal involvements at the World Cup from defence, there’s surely set to be more lucrative suitors to beat first.
