Tony Scott has speculated there could be clauses in Jordan Pickford’s proposed new contract regarding a move to a Champions League club.
Frank Lampard has spoken out about Pickford’s future at the club, claiming that the Toffees can match the goalkeeper’s ambitions.
The 28-year-old currently has 18 months left on his apparent £110k-per-week contract, leaving it no surprise that Everton are urgently trying to tie their No 1 down to new terms.
But with Pickford’s reputation in the game growing after another impressive international tournament as Gareth Southgate’s No 1 and previous rumours of a move away, it will be interesting to see just what a new contract involves.
Scott spoke on the All Together Now Everton podcast claiming that clauses surrounding a transfer to a top European outfit could be included to keep all parties happy.
Commenting on the prospective new deal for the Toffees shot-stopper, he said: “The Pickford one, for me, is going to be really fascinating to see if there’s any clauses in it. We know what agents are like [in] this day and age and we know what players are like – they’re ambitious.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if a Champions League [club] comes in for Jordan Pickford there’ll be a set amount – maybe £60m or whatever it is – that if a Champions League club meet Everton’s valuation, then he will go.”
TIF Thoughts on Scott’s comments…
Pickford has arguably been one of Everton’s best signings in recent years, with him certainly justifying every penny of his £25m fee when he arrived in 2017 as the third-most-expensive goalkeeper of all time.
Following 213 appearances for the Toffees and him notching his 50th England cap in Qatar, the goalkeeper will surely have his sights set higher than another potential relegation battle again this season.
Previously linked with a move to Manchester United in September by The Telegraph and uncertainty with Chelsea’s No 1 role, an opportunity for Pickford to make the step up to one of the Premier League’s big six could yet be around the corner with his new contract sure to find an agreement favourable to all parties.
The grass is not always Greener, I hope Jordan signs another contract with us, and becomes part of a team to grace the new stadium, if not , it’s NOT the end of the world, but I do think he is happy at Everton
