Journalist Joe Thomas has stated on his Twitter account that a loan move may be the ‘next logical’ step for Everton youngster Tom Cannon.

Everton’s Under-21s defeated League Two side Mansfield Town 2-1 in the Papa John’s Trophy with goals from Cannon and Liam Higgins.

Cannon, who is only 19 years old, has just come back from a spell with the senior team in Australia, netting in their 5-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers.

Following the success, the Toffees prospect sent Lampard a strong message, claiming he’s ‘ready’ to play at a senior level.

However, Thomas believes that Cannon’s future could see him going out on loan in the January transfer window.

He stated: “Not sure what comes next for Tom Cannon, feels a loan spell from January may be the next logical step in his development – especially with two new attackers potentially strengthening the senior team.

“But this lad can score. Ice running through his veins in front of goal.”

TIF Thoughts on Thomas’ comments…

We believe that a half-season loan spell could be a great opportunity for Cannon to get more experience and some consistent senior minutes.

Everton manager Frank Lampard has previously stated that they’re looking for ‘more and different’ options when it comes to getting a striker in during the January window.

Cannon operates as a striker, but with his lack of Premier League experience, the Toffees boss will likely look to bring a more experienced forward in, despite his desire for more attacking options.

The Toffees youngster knows where the net is at youth level, as he’s got six goals from 10 league appearances this season.

So perhaps a side in either the Championship or League One could look to bring Cannon in for the second half of the season. He does have one Premier League and Carabao Cup appearance to his name, so must be seen as someone with potential.

A positive spell away would definitely give Lampard something to think about and we feel it could lead to him being brought into the squad next term and getting more opportunities in the first team.
