Everton boss Frank Lampard has given an injury update on striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin ahead of their Boxing Day clash in the Premier League.

Speaking on the club’s YouTube channel, he said that the striker will be in training with the club on Friday. In addition, he added that Calvert-Lewin ‘may be available’ for the game against Wolves, but didn’t want to ‘commit’ those words due to his various injuries.

The forward has missed eight Premier League matches and last played for the Toffees in their 2-0 loss to Leicester City back in November. Also, the 25-year-old didn’t travel with the squad on the mid-season tour of Australia.

Lampard said: “As we sit here now, Dominic’s recovering well and he’s going to join in with us in training tomorrow [Friday]. So it gives us the potential that he may be available for Wolves at the minute, but I don’t want to commit to that because he’s been out – we all know he had various injuries, particularly the knee was the one we want to clear up.

“We’re hopeful that that now is cleared up as such. And so it’s making sure we get him match-fit and ready, so we’ll see how that one goes.”

TIF Thoughts on Lampard’s comments…

We think it’s probably for the best that Calvert-Lewin is not risked for their fixture against Wolves if it could lead to him picking up another long-term injury.

Throughout his time at Everton, the striker has suffered numerous injuries and knocks. When he’s fit, Calvert-Lewin has been a fine source of goals for the Toffees, as he netted 13 league goals in the 2019/20 campaign and then bagged 16 the following season.

However, Calvert-Lewin has struggled to stay fit this season, which means his tally has remained low, with just one goal in the league to date.

The club’s other striking option is Neal Maupay, a player who has also struggled to find the back of the net. Since joining in the summer, the Frenchman has only scored once in the Premier League himself.

Therefore, we feel Lampard should perhaps look to bring in a new forward in January as his team as a collective are just not scoring enough, with Everton currently the joint second-lowest scorers in the league with a total of 11.
