Fabrizio Romano has stated on his YouTube channel that Chelsea are ‘still actively working’ to sign RB Leipzig defender, Josko Gvardiol.
Despite being so young, Gvardiol has played in all of the European side’s World Cup matches, picking up two clean sheets against Morocco and Belgium.
According to Romano, Chelsea and RB Leipzig have a good working relationship. However, he has made it clear that as it stands, any deal is far from done.
He stated: “The relationship with Leipzig is very good, and this is why they are still actively working to sign Josko Gvardiol.
“But I can tell you that, as of today, beginning of December, it’s still not a done deal. We can’t say that it’s done for Josko Gvardiol to Chelsea; there is still some work to do.”
TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…
We believe that Gvardiol could be a really good signing for Chelsea. He’s incredibly young and has the potential to develop into a top player.
The Croatian would likely suit the style of manager Graham Potter, as he’s certainly very comfortable on the ball for a defender.
He’s in the top 5% of defenders for progressive passes made and in the top 1% of dribbles completed, based on his performances over the past year (as per FBref). This ability to play out from the back could be an attractive asset for a club like Chelsea.
Chelsea have some quality defenders in their ranks such as Kalidou Koulibaly and Thiago Silva, though the latter is no spring chicken at 38 years old, so perhaps the club may bring Gvardiol in to be a long-term replacement for the Brazilian.
When the World Cup wraps up, Gvardiol could have a lot of potential suitors after him. However, the Blues will be hoping their good relationship with RB Leipzig will be a factor that helps them bring the Croatian to Stamford Bridge.
