Chelsea could make another move for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez after their previous bids were rejected, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.
The Blues had a deadline day bid rejected in the summer for the Mexican, but they could reignite their interest as they look to strengthen their midfield.
Speaking on the CFC365 Podcast (12.25), Jacobs explained Chelsea’s previous bids and why they might go back in for him.
“Another midfielder is Edson Alvarez, who of course Chelsea tried to sign on the final day of the last window and the player himself didn’t turn up for training, because he was trying to force through the move,” Jacobs stated.
“So we know 100% that Edson Alvarez wants the move to Chelsea, but Ajax simply didn’t want to sell. He’s a good age at 25, has won many caps for Mexico, and the beauty of Edson Alvarez is he can be thrown straight into the first team and no doubt have a significant impact.”
TIF thoughts on Alvarez and Chelsea…
Any deal for the Ajax star could be pricey, as Chelsea’s original bid of £43m was rejected, and given the fees the Dutch club have received for the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Antony, they could play hardball over the price tag.
Although Chelsea could benefit from signing a player in the mould of Alvarez, if they are going to spend heavily on Declan Rice they may be better served looking at a cheaper alternative to the Ajax star.
Youri Tielemans is out of contract at Leicester at the end of the season, and they could potentially secure his signature for a low fee or even for free, and he is a much more proven option of the same age.
