Joe Nicholson has admitted that he doesn’t expect Sunderland to be very active during the January transfer window.
Sunderland were indeed very busy over the summer as they handed both Alex Neil and then Tony Mowbray a total of 10 new players to help them cope with life back in the Championship, and it appears to have worked with the Black cats sitting comfortably in 11th.
However, Nicholson doesn’t expect the same to happen next month with maybe just a few additions likely to be on the cards after the noises he’s heard come out of the Stadium of Light recently.
Nicholson has dropped the interesting Sunderland transfer claim on The Roar podcast.
He said: (25:00) “It’s a case of who is coming. We’ve heard the last few weeks from Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and from Kristjan Speakman, we also hear from Tony Mowbray every week and it doesn’t sound like Sunderland will make too many signings in January, it may be one or two tweaks to the squad.

“I think one area, for me, I think we’ve mentioned a lot before that needs strengthening is that holding midfield role, and we heard on deadline day Sunderland were trying to bring in another player to act as cover for Corry Evans, so I think that will be one of their priorities in January.”
TIF Thoughts on Sunderland transfer plans…
The Black Cats did splash out over £5 million during the summer after years outside of England’s second tier, so not going heavy and crazy next month is pretty understandable, although perhaps not exciting for fans to hear.
However, they could indeed change their plans quite drastically if they end up losing star striker Ross Stewart with Keith Downie claiming that clubs in both the Championship and Premier League hold an interest in him.
Sunderland have reportedly slapped a £10 million price tag on his head, so if they were to receive that major cash injection from Stewart’s sale then Mowbray would very likely be allowed to make more than just a couple of additions to ensure his squad stays strong.
