Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson was ‘delighted’ and ‘over the moon’ to be called up by Gareth Southgate to the England squad.

He spoke on The Footballer’s Football Podcast and discussed his reaction to the call-up. It’s been an impressive campaign this season for the striker, netting six goals this season.

There was discussion about which strikers should’ve been taken to the World Cup alongside Harry Kane, Some fans weren’t happy that Ivan Toney wasn’t selected by Southgate.

However, considering the season he’s had, six goals is very impressive return from the Magpies striker, especially when you consider he suffered a hamstring injury in late September.

Wilson expressed his delight with the call-up. He said: “It was crazy, I was taken aback.

“You kind of hope that you get in there, you’re wishing and praying you get in there.

“Until you get that message, nothing is set in stone.

“I’m delighted, over the moon.”

TIF Thoughts on Wilson’s comments…

We share the delight that Wilson has for his England call-up. He’s had a strong season which sees Newcastle sitting currently third in the Premier League.

Furthermore, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen the 30-year-old put on a Three Lions shirt. He currently has four caps for England. He netted his one and only goal thus far for his nation against the USA in a 3-0 win.

If Wilson were to score for England in Qatar it would be a storybook moment. The striker hasn’t played for the Three Lions since 2018, so it has been a long time coming for the former Bournemouth man.

With Harry Kane likely leading the line, we may not see much of Wilson. However, we’re sure it’ll be a great experience for the Newcastle star.
