Footage from the most recent Rangers match suggests that both the referee and VAR may have made a big mistake in not awarding a penalty.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side endured another frustrating afternoon in their final game before the World Cup break as they failed to win in the Scottish Premiership.

Indeed, Rangers had to settle for just a point on the road in a 1-1 draw when they travelled to face St Mirren with goals from Jonah Ayunga and James Tavernier deciding the affair.

However, life could have been much more complicated for the Light Blues had referee Kevin Clancy pointed to the spot in the first few minutes of the game.

This footage shared on social media clearly shows Gers midfielder James Sands kicking the opponent in the box as he attempts to clear the ball but no foul was given.

TIF thoughts on the incident and Rangers…

Clearly, the referee didn’t spot it, or at least he didn’t think there was enough contact to warrant a penalty, but Sands certainly catches his man. And so Rangers were rather lucky that VAR opted not to intervene.

Had the penalty been awarded and then scored, Van Bronckhorst’s men – who struggled enough as it was – would have found it really tough to get a result after conceding so early on in the game.

In the end, the call went their way and they managed to pick up a solitary point. However, that may not been enough to keep their manager in a job with pressure now seriously mounting.
