Pundit Noel Whelan has claimed that he ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ if Steven Gerrard was to end up back at Rangers as their manager in the near future.
It really does seem as though the Ibrox club could have a big vacancy they are looking to fill in the very near future as Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s position remains under threat.
If Van Bronckhorst was to go, it seems as though Gerrard could be a strong candidate to return to the Scottish club. This, at least, certainly seems to be what Whelan is thinking.
Speaking recently in an interview with Football Insider, he explained: “I can’t see too many jobs being available for him in the Premier League.
“He’ll have a long wait.
“There could be an opening at Rangers, however, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he went back – just because of the success he had there.
“He knows the club, he knows the board, he’s familiar with the surroundings.
“He won’t want to be out of work too long.
“I think Steven would consider returning to Rangers, because I can’t see a Premier League opening for him until next year.”
Would you want Steven Gerrard back at Rangers?
TIF thoughts on Steven Gerrard and Rangers…
Of course, what perhaps makes Gerrard, who was hailed by Jurgen Klopp for his ‘great’ job at Rangers, a natural candidate at this stage is the fact that he is currently out of work. The former Liverpool captain was sacked back in October after a poor start to the Premier League season with Aston Villa.
On top of his apparent availability, he also used to manage the Light Blues and did so in a pretty impressive fashion, delivering their first league title win in 10 years.
With that in mind, on paper, it certainly would make a lot of sense for the Englishman to return to Scotland and help the club get back to winning ways. However, it remains unclear if either club would want to go back to rekindle this former relationship.
Still, if Van Bronckhorst is fired, it’s hard to imagine a world where Gerrard isn’t at least considered by the Rangers board.
