Celtic centre-back Moritz Jenz has come in for criticism following the side’s 5-1 drubbing on Wednesday night.

The on-loan German defender was perilous to stem the attacking tide that the European champions had to offer, with Real Madrid condemning the Hoops to a heavy defeat.

Los Blancos opened the scoring after Jenz was deemed to have handled the ball in the area.

It was unfortunate how he stumbled and the ball bounced up onto his arm, however, it summed up a rather forgetful night for the 23-year-old.

Writing for 90min, journalist Tom Gott handed two Celtic players a 2/10 match rating, with Jenz and Greg Taylor those most harshly judged.

On the Lorient-owned giant, he wrote: “Set the tone by giving away a penalty five minutes in. Looked terrified whenever asked to do anything.”

Not for the first time this season in Europe, the Fulham academy graduate been called out for his display, having also been slammed for his showing in the defeat at RB Leipzig.

However, that can perhaps be expected considering this was his first-ever European campaign, let alone its top competition.

But the stats back up that he struggled at the Santiago Bernabeu against some of the best the game has to offer – Jenz lost possession four times and to make any interceptions or tackles on the night, in addition to giving away a penalty (SofaScore).

A team-high five clearances and three blocks alongside centre-back partner Carl Starfelt highlights how busy the duo were.

But for Jenz and the rest of the side, this will be a learning curve and he will hopefully only become a better player for it.
