Celtic: Alexandro Bernabei out of sorts in Sydney friendly

|

Celtic’s Alexandro Bernabei was handed a 6/10 match rating for his showing in the Hoops’ friendly in Australia on Thursday morning.

Ange Postecoglou’s side lost their opening game of the Sydney Super Cup to Sydney FC at the Allianz Stadium.

Kyogo Furuhashi had given the Hoops the lead, with Bernabei’s shot deflecting in off the striker.

But they conceded moments later, before Max Burgess gave the home side the win in the second period.

Postecoglou started with a few first-team regulars while giving a chance to some of those that have been less involved so far this season.

Bernabei was one of those who was afforded an opportunity to show his worth, but he did struggle defensively.

The Celtic Way’s Aidan Macdonald handed the Argentinian a 6/10 match rating for his performance and attached the following comment:

Despite his involvement in the opening goal of the game, the left-back was found wanting defensively at times and this led to the central defenders becoming isolated. The hosts hit the woodwork a few times at the start of the match and most of the chances came from the Argentine being caught out of position. The left-hand side was a bit more solid once he had departed at half-time.”

Will Bernabei shine at Celtic?

Ever since his £3.75m arrival from Lanus in the summer, the 22-year-old has had to bide his time to get a chance in the team.

With Greg Taylor holding down the left-back berth, Bernabei’s minutes have been limited, but he had started five of the Bhoys’ seven league fixtures prior to the mid-season break.

The £17k-per-week gem has weighed in with two assists, but it is the other side of his game it appears that he needs to work on.

Having only recently come over from Argentina, you would expect him to take time to adapt, but despite the losses in concentration down under, we believe there is still a burgeoning talent within.
