Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that it would be a ‘major coup’ if West Ham United were to complete a ‘surprise’ move for Jordi Alba.

According to a recent report in the Spanish media, Hammers’ manager David Moyes is keen to bring the Barcelona left-back to the Premier League in the near future.

The same article explains that Xavi Hernandez does see the player in his plans and so the Spanish outfit are happy to let Alba leave – especially as they will hope to get his high wages off their books.

Amid all this speculation, O’Rourke has admitted that it would be a shock to see the deal go through but touted it as a potentially great bit of business for  West Ham

Indeed, he told This Is Futbol: “It’d be a surprise move. Obviously, Jordi Alba has been a great servant to Barcelona coming to the twilight of his career now.

“So if he was to fancymove to the Premier League, it would be a major coup for West Ham if they were to get him.”

TIF thoughts on Jordi Alba and West Ham…

If Alba was to arrive in the Premier League this winter, he certainly would bring a whole lot of top-level experience. Indeed, the Spaniard has won the Champions Liga, five La Liga trophies, and the Club World Cup – while also listing Euro 2012 with Spain.

With that in mind, it’s not hard to see why some may get excited about this possible deal. However, the left-back is now 33 years of age and so there may be a good reason why Barca is happy to let him go.

Seeing as he has started just seven out of 14 possible league games this term, it’s fair to say his best years are probably behind him. Even so, he’s such a high-profile name it could be fascinating to see how he gets on in England if a move to West Ham materialises.
