Kieron Dyer has claimed that West Ham United’s poor defeat at the weekend is a major setback for them as a club after spending big over the summer.
The Hammers were the third-biggest spenders in the Premier League during the summer transfer window, which saw them recruit eight new players in what was a serious sign of intent from the board to help them kick on after back-to-back seasons qualifying for Europe.
However, the reality has been far from that, with West Ham winning just four league games all season and finding themselves sitting just two points above the relegation zone after 14 games.
Former Premier League ace Dyer has claimed on The Football Daily podcast that the Hammers’ defeat to Crystal Palace and their overall performances this season will be seen as a big setback for the club.
He said: “With the money they’ve invested now, they don’t have to play in a mid-to-low block, they can get after teams, because they have got really quality players. [It was a] great result for Crystal Palace, but that is a massive setback for West Ham, especially going 1-0 up, they would’ve thought they would’ve won that game.”

It has been something of a reality check for West Ham this season after enjoying marvellous back-to-back seasons under David Moyes by qualifying for the Europa League and Europa Conference League, as well as reaching the semi-finals of the former last season.
However, things appear to have gone south very quickly, with Moyes calling out fans for being supposed ‘experts‘ and a section of the fanbase voicing their frustrations by booing the team after their most recent defeat.
If Moyes can’t translate the club’s European form into domestic success, his time at the London Stadium may not last long, as the board won’t be happy to see them fighting against relegation after spending so much money over the summer.
