The referee and VAR may have made a key mistake in the most recent Tottenham Hotspur by not awarding a penalty for a possible shove on Ryan Sessegnon.
Things could have been different, though, had the referee pointed to the spot when Trent Alexander-Arnold appeared to push Sessegnon to the ground inside the box – as seen in this footage online.
TIF thoughts on the challenge and Tottenham…
It’s clear that the Spurs wingback is going to get to the ball ahead of Alexander-Arnold and so the Liverpool man has to make the challenge. His strong shove, however, clumsily sends Seggengon to the floor but referee Andy Madley waved play on.
Do you think it should have been a penalty?
Seeing as it wasn’t quite a blatant enough mistake, VAR opted against intervening and so the original decision was not overturned – much to the anger of the home crowd.
Journalist Dan Kilpatrick certainly seemed to think it was a foul, he took to Twitter to say: “Frustrating for Spurs who have hit the post and probably should have had a penalty. But they’ve responded well to going behind.”
And on a weekend where Manchester City got a rather generous call when Kevin De Bruyne hit the deck in the box, perhaps Spurs will feel hard done by to not see this decision go their way.
And, Fulham got a penalty for Joao Cancelo’s challenge on Harry Wilson, which was almost identical to Trent’s push, so as far as consistency goes it’s not a good look.
