Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier would be a great signing for Tottenham Hotspur if Antonio Conte was to bring him to North London
That’s what journalist Dean Jones said to This Is Futbol when discussing the possibility of French stopper joining Spurs.
At only 22-years-old, Meslier is playing his third season of Premier League football and has impressed many. Especially at the end of October when Leeds travelled to Anfield, the Frenchman picked up a 9 rating from Sofascore for his performance.
Hugo Lloris is currently the Spurs number one, there’s no doubt he’s been a top quality keeper for a long time. However, his time as the first choice could be coming to an end.
Jamie Carragher described Lloris recently as ‘not good enough’, after his recent performance against Liverpool.
Jones sees a lot of potential in Meslier and feels he’d be the right fit for Tottenham.
“I think he’d be really good signing someone like Tottenham and when you’re considering how you move on from someone like Hugo Lloris, who’s had such an unbelievable career you want to be looking at goalkeepers that have been outstanding, especially in times of real difficulties and Meslier has been through that. So I think he’d be a great candidate.”
TIF’s thoughts on Jones’ comments
We believe that Meslier would be a great replacement for Lloris. He’s young and already established himself as good enough for the Premier League and he’s only going to get better.
He’s already made 41 saves this season, so he’s a goalkeeper who knows what its like to be under pressure. Having such a young and exciting prospect under the coaching of Conte would do wonders for his career.
Furthermore, questions are being asked of Lloris, who is no spring chicken at 35-years-old. Sooner or later, Spurs will need a new number one. Meslier could well be the young and hungry replacement they need who can play between the posts for a long time.
