Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier is unlikely to be shortlisted as a potential successor for Hugo Lloris.

This has been suggested by journalist Ryan Taylor, who has been speaking about the Leeds goalkeeper’s future on Chris Cowlin’s YouTube channel.

There have been reports previously suggesting Tottenham Hotspur could be one of the sides to look at Meslier as their potential long-term option between the sticks.

This comes as their current French goalkeeper, Lloris, has come under scrutiny for some of his mistakes this season.

First up, which of these World Cup debutants could Leeds go back in for this winter?

However, it is now believed the Leeds shot-stopper is not viewed as up to the standard required at the Champions League club, who will likely target other options.

Taylor said: “I don’t really see Spurs as strong contenders for Meslier. With all due respect, I think he’s a good Premier League goalkeeper and he’s obviously young, and he’s going to improve, but I think Spurs would probably be looking for someone a little bit more established.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say Illan Meslier’s in the top five goalkeepers in the Premier League, or even close to that, really. I would actually say he’s in the bottom 10.”

TIF Thoughts on Taylor’s comments…

We do not think many Leeds fans will be concerned by what other teams think about their goalkeeper and these comments will come to the relief of all at Elland Road.

Is Meslier a top 10 goalkeeper in the Premier League?

With Spurs seemingly now heading towards a transition between the sticks, it would’ve been fair to think Meslier could have been the obvious replacement for Lloris.

Meslier currently sits inside the top 10 of Premier League goalkeepers for saves made this season (44), with just one fewer than Lloris.

And while Meslier may not be ready to make the jump up to a Champions League side just yet, he is still just 22 years old and has a long career ahead of him.
