Sky Sports contributor Paul Robinson believes that Alessandro Bastoni would be a “statement signing” for Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs were persistently linked with the towering defender during the summer with Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici thought to be big admirers of the Inter Milan centre-back.
But according to The Sun, Tottenham are still keen on signing the 23-year-old.
It suggests that Conte is eager to upgrade his backline when the market reopens this winter and Bastoni could well be targeted.
Speaking to Football Insider Robinson gave his thoughts on a potential deal.
He said: “Bastoni would be a statement signing.
“That is the type of signing Spurs need to make if they want to go onto the next level. They need to get that level of player now.
“That is what Conte is hinting at in his press conferences when he says he needs two or three transfer windows. Conte needs to be given the time and the funds to turn Spurs into a side who challenge consistently at the top of the table.”
TIF Thoughts on Bastoni and Tottenham…
Do you think Spurs will eventually land Bastoni?
Yes
No
The Italian was in and out of the Inter side prior to the mid-season break ranking fourth in the side for interceptions per 90 minutes and third for passes per game (WhoScored).
He played an integral role under Conte as the Nerazzurri won the Scudetto back in 2020/21 helping the side to 14 clean sheets across his 33 appearances.
The £87k-per-week beast also ranks in the top 1% among his positional peers for shot-creating actions per 90 (Fbref) and has managed three assists already this season highlighting his effectiveness on both sides of the ball.
However, the north London club may have to wait until the summer to try their luck with Fabrizio Romano of the impression that he will be going nowhere in January.
