French football expert Jonathan Johnson believes Morocco striker Zakaria Aboukhlal could potentially be a future target for Southampton.

The 22-year-old is currently out in Qatar representing his country, and on his 14th cap, the Netherlands-born star netted a memorable goal as his nation defeated Belgium in Group F.

It is likely that Saints officials were watching, too, considering Football Insider reported at the end of October that the south-coast club were keeping an eye on the Toulouse hotshot, as well as Leicester City.

Having only jumped to Ligue 1 in the summer, it is unlikely to think that Aboukhlal will be on the move anytime soon, but Johnson has suggested that St Mary’s could be a possible landing spot for the frontman in the future.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think a team like Southampton could potentially be a good fit because they also have a similar outlook in the way that they’re identifying their transfer targets, but I don’t think he’d be on the move this quickly, certainly not in terms of a January move.

“I think as well, Premier League clubs will probably want to see a little more consistency from him in terms of goal return, but it’s been a decent start to life with Toulouse so far.”

After coming through the Willem II and PSV youth setups, the Moroccan moved to France in July from AZ Alkmaar.

Able to play anywhere across the front three, Aboukhlal – who has been branded a “monster” – has scored three and assisted another three goals in 15 league appearances this season.

However, having only been directly involved in 13 goals in 90 games at his previous club, it is clear to see why any potential suitors would have their reservations.

With Nathan Jones’ side currently ranking 16th for goals scored in the Premier League and leading striker Che Adams topping the scoring charts with a mere four-goal tally, it is clear that the Saints need investment in forward areas, although this Moroccan talent does seem like one to keep an eye on over the coming windows.
