Journalist Pete O’Rourke has hinted that Newcastle United could intensify their pursuit Borna Sosa should he impress at the World Cup.

German media outlet BILD previously reported that Newcastle were interested in signing the left-back in January with Inter Milan and Atalanta also eyeing up the Stuttgart star.

Matt Targett arrived permanently at St. James’ Park in the summer and began the season on the left-hand side of the defence but he hasn’t started in the Premier League since the middle of September.

Dan Burn has been Eddie Howe’s preferred choice playing each of the eight games prior to the mid-season break at left-back but O’Rourke has suggested that Sosa could be targeted in the new year.

Speaking to This is Futbol he said: ”I think it’s an area of the team that Eddie Howe feels they need to strengthen in and Sosa has had a great season for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga.

“Lots of assists and goals as well and he’ll be playing at the World Cup with Croatia so if he impresses there as well I’m sure Newcastle will yeah maybe stepping up their interest in Sosa long-term.”

TIF Thoughts on Sosa and Newcastle…

Do Newcastle need a new left-back?

Yes!

Yes!

No, we're good.

No, we're good.

Dubbed a ‘crossing machine’ by journalist Ronan Murphy the 24-year-old has already produced eight assists in 13 appearances this season.

He played 90 minutes in Croatia’s World Cup opener on Wednesday and ever since vacating his home club in Zagreb the nine-cap ace has been directly involved in 34 goals in 96 appearances at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

The £15-per-week ace, who has been described as Beckham-esque, will certainly be one for fans of the Toon to keep an eye on in Qatar but PIF may have further competition for his signature should he find top gear in the desert.
