Nottingham Forest: Darren Fletcher not impressed by Remo Freuler’s form

|

BT Sport commentator and Nottingham Forest fan Darren Fletcher believes that Remo Freuler has been ‘disappointing’ so far this season.

The midfielder became Forest’s 15th signing of the summer back in August, and considering the level he had been playing at, a lot more was perhaps expected of the Switzerland star.

Capped 48 times by his country, the 30-year-old had spent over six seasons with Atalanta in Italy.

He was part of the side that qualified for each of the last three editions of the Champions League prior to this campaign, but despite becoming a regular in Steve Cooper’s XI in recent weeks, Fletcher has been less than impressed.

Speaking on the Garibaldi Red podcast, he said: “For me, one of the most disappointing aspects of what I’ve seen at Forest this season is Freuler’s display in midfield.

“I don’t think he gives enough. I don’t think he passes the ball forward well enough.

“I don’t think he’s looking to break the lines. I don’t think his first instinct is to bring Morgan Gibbs-White and Brennan Johnson, people like that, into the game.

“I think he’s playing too safe, and then on Saturday takes a massive risk, he plays a ball that he doesn’t know what the end result is going to be and Forest concede the goal.”

Freuler has started eight times for the City Ground outfit in the league this season, including in each of the last six games.

After 260 games for his previous club, the 5ft 9in dynamo is struggling to find his feet in the Premier League in the early stages of the campaign.

His 6.3 average match rating on WhoScored sees him rank 14th among his teammates.

Ryan Yates, often playing alongside Freuler, is averaging more blocks, tackles and clearances than the Swiss per game, as well as a slightly higher passing accuracy.

Despite this, we feel that given time, the experienced midfielder can get to grips with the English game.
