Newcastle United: Bruno Guimaraes arguably lucky to avoid red card

Image for Newcastle United: Bruno Guimaraes arguably lucky to avoid red card

Footage of Bruno Guimaraes lunging into a tackle during Newcastle United’s latest win could have earned him a red card just for the intent.

It was certainly a frantic night on Tyneside – especially the final few minutes, with a lot of challenges flying in from Eddie Howe’s side, including a crunching one by Dan Burn.

However, one that didn’t quite connect with a Chelsea player nor the ball, was a two-footed lunge by star midfielder Guimaraes on Christian Pulisic that the Chelsea man avoided – perhaps for the best.

Guimaraes will have been feeding off the atmosphere inside St James’ Park, but he will likely have had no complaints had VAR gotten involved following his dangerous tackle from behind on the American.

Should Guimaraes have been sent off?

TIF Thoughts on Guimaraes’ tackle…

While some may say this is a good example of Guimaraes willing to give everything for the club and to get the three points, had he connected with Pulisic and seen red, he’d have missed the club’s next three games, which could have impacted their push for the top four.

Howe can not afford to lose Guimaraes for any games this season as they are yet to win a match this term that the Brazilian hasn’t featured in, showing how crucial he is to the team and their amazing run of form.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

It may well have been a bit of a stretch for VAR to get involved purely on the basis of the intent from Guimaraes given so much else happened during the game and after the full-time whistle, as the officials may not have had enough time to assess the situation – and ended up letting off Guimaraes massively.
