Jordan Cronin has heaped a whole lot of praise on Newcastle United’s summer signing Alex Murphy for his performance for the Under-21s last night.

The Young Magpies took on rivals Sunderland at St James’ Park, and despite taking an early lead through Joe White in the first half, they couldn’t hold on, with Black Cats goalkeeper Alex Bass scoring an added-time equaliser with his hand.

Murphy is one of a few young signings that have been made by Newcastle since the arrival of Dan Ashworth alongside Garang Kuol and Jude Smith, which shows how the club are planning for the long term.

Cronin picked out Murphy for his superb performance last night, handing him an 8/10 rating for his display, highlighting his obvious experience at first-team level.

He wrote: “Easy to understand why he’s so highly rated. Showcased his strength and looked composed on the ball. You can tell the defender has already played senior football in Ireland.”

Will Newcastle qualify for Europe?

TIF Thoughts on Alex Murphy…

It should perhaps come as no surprise how well Murphy performed in a rather lively Tyne-Wear derby – the Magpies were reduced to 10 men – as he’s already got 32 first-team appearances under his belt at 18 years of age from his time back in Ireland.

Murphy was the captain last night for the Under-21s despite only being signed over the summer, which once again goes to show how highly rated he is within the club.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Murphy can perhaps find himself on the bench in the Carabao Cup fixture coming up next week as left back is not a position with much depth given that Dan Burn is playing there at the moment and is backed up by Matt Targett, and while players such as Jamal Lewis and Paul Dummett have hardly had a look-in – so Murphy’s chance could yet come soon.
