Journalist Dominic Scurr has claimed that adding James Maddison to this Newcastle United squad would be good business from PIF.

Maddison was a summer target for the Magpies as they looked to assemble a squad capable of pushing for Europe, although their two bids – including one over £40m – were not enough to see the player join.

However, that doesn’t mean the Magpies have now given up on him, with reports claiming they will once again look to go back in for the England international, which is something Scurr would love to see.

Scurr admitted on the Mouth of the Tyne YouTube channel that Maddison would prove to be good business for Newcastle if they managed to sign him.

He said: “Considering how the club did go after him in the summer, put two bids in, weren’t able to get him, and the way he’s actually kicked on since then – I think, seven goals and four assists in 13 games – even Leicester, when they were struggling, he was the standout player.

Will Newcastle regret not signing Maddison?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“You’re looking at a world where you pay £100m for Jack Grealish, I’d say Maddison is a better option in my opinion, and if you could get him for around £50m, that would be good business for Newcastle.”

TIF Thoughts on interest in Maddison…

While Newcastle will indeed still hold a strong interest in Maddison, we think it will be very unlikely that Leicester will sanction a sale in January as they certainly need him in their side to keep up their recent good run of form.

It’s no surprise why Newcastle were interested in the midfielder as he’s got 11 goal involvements to his name, while also being picked out as ‘sensational‘ this year by manager Brendan Rodgers.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

The time for Newcastle to sign Maddison was certainly over the summer, as the Foxes may have been tempted if they received an offer of around £60m, but given his form this season and inclusion at the World Cup, even that sort of money may not be enough to land him in the new year.
