Lee Ryder has claimed that Newcastle United pair Jacob Murphy and Allan Saint-Maxmin are pushing to start this weekend.

After speaking to Eddie Howe in his pre-match press conference, Ryder claimed that both Murphy and Saint-Maximin were pushing to start vs Southampton due to Joelinton’s absence after picking up five yellow cards.

Joelinton has featured in all but one game this season in the league under Howe, so his absence will likely be felt throughout the team on Sunday, but if it means someone such as Saint-Maximin returns, fans will surely be excited.

Ryder has claimed on his YouTube channel that both Murphy and Saint-Maximin are wanting to start vs the Saints in the absence of Joelinton.

“Jacob Murphy is pushing, Allan Saint-Maximin is also back, so some big options. For Southampton, they’ll be certainly concerned about a Newcastle team bang in form heading down to the south coast and Eddie Howe’s just spoilt for choice in terms of selection.”

TIF Thoughts on Howe’s selection headache…

Who should start for Newcastle?

Murphy!

Saint-Maximin!

Saint-Maximin!

While many will now know Joelinton for his role in Newcastle’s midfield three in the last two games he’s played as a left winger, so the likelihood is that Howe will go for one of Murphy to Saint-Maximin to replace him.

The more sensible option would be with Murphy given he’s got one goal to his name this season and has proved himself to be a dependable member of the squad by featuring in every single game across all competitions, while Saint-Maximin hasn’t started a game since August.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Saint-Maximin, however, would be the more exciting option and one that would likely strike fear into the Saints’ defence, but there would be no point in rising the Frenchman for a start at Southampton if he isn’t 100% fit.
