Newcastle United: Journalist heaps praise on Fabian Schar for his turnaround in form

|

John Gibson has been left very impressed by Newcastle United’s Fabian Schar and the way he’s been able to turn his career around on Tyneside.

Schar, who was signed for just £3.6 million back in 2018, has gone on to rack up over 112 appearances for the Magpies despite seemingly falling out of favour under former manager Steve Bruce, as he has proved to be a crucial player for Eddie Howe.

The Switzerland international has even recently signed a new contract at St James’ Park, with Howe claiming he ‘really’ likes the defender and what he brings to the side – and with Schar yet to taste defeat this season, it’s no surprise.

Gibson has hailed Schar’s turnaround in form on the Everything is Black and White podcast, claiming he used to be a ‘walking mistake’ in the Newcastle side.

He said: “Schar looked like he was a walking mistake and that he was always going to drop a monumental clanger [under Bruce] and that’s been eliminated from his game.”

TIF Thoughts on Schar…

Eddie Howe deserves a huge amount of credit for turning around the careers of players such as Schar, Joelinton, Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron, who may have all been classed as fringe players prior to his arrival and are now some of the first names on the team sheet.

It’s now common knowledge how good Newcastle’s defence has been conceding just 10 goals all season, the fewest in the Premier League, and they’ve managed to do so with their back four costing a combined total of just £65 million.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

This time last year, Schar may not have even had the World Cup on his mind given how poor the Magpies were playing and winless in the league, but now starting every game for Newcastle, he will be pretty confident that he could not only get a spot in the Switzerland squad but even become a starter for his country.
