The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has revealed that Eddie Howe and his coaching team are looking to get Miguel Almiron providing more assists for his Newcastle United teammates.

Almiron has quickly become one of the most talked about players in the Premier League, having gone from being the brunt of a joke from Jack Grealish last season to the most in-form player in the league, with seven goals in his last seven appearances.

The Paraguay international has eight goals this season – doubling his previous best tally in a Newcastle shirt. However, one area of weakness remains, and that is his ability to set up his teammates to score goals.

Waugh has highlighted on Pod on the Tyne that Howe and his staff are constantly working with Almiron at Darsley Park to improve this part of his game and make him a more all-round player and teammate.

He said: “I don’t think he got an assist [against Southampton] so it extends further to 77 games now he hasn’t actually got an assist for, so that’s an area which Newcastle are actively trying to work on with him as well. They think that’s an area he could still improve and bring more from.”

TIF Thoughts on Miguel Almiron…

It is quite an incredible stat provided by Waugh in a piece he recently produced for The Athletic. However, if Almiron can keep up this run of scoring goals, we think assists will very quickly become a distant thought for the winger.

Almiron appears to have taken Grealish’s comments earlier this year and the talk of a new right-winger being wanted by the Magpies over the summer very personally, and has used them to step up his game in ways not many people would’ve thought he was capable of.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

A lot of the goals Almiron has scored have been simply stunning, including strikes against Aston Villa, Fulham and Everton – and while these sorts of goals may not be sustainable, the fact he now has the confidence to take them on just goes to show the different type of player he now is under Howe.
