Newcastle United have been linked with a potential move for Premier League youngster Cody Drameh in the January transfer window.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has recently suggested that Eddie Howe’s men are one of a number of big European clubs interested in the 20-year-old, with other interested parties from the German Bundesliga and Ligue 1.

And speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, presenter and YouTuber Conor McGilligan has hailed the reported Toon target as a possible long-term replacement for Kieran Trippier.

First up, which of these World Cup debutants could Leeds go back in for this winter?

Leeds United defender Drameh has not been handed much of an opportunity by Jesse Marsch at Elland Road this season, with just 70 minutes of Premier League action to his name (via Transfermarkt).

Amid the reports of the Whites potentially seeing a Premier League move on the horizon for Drameh, McGilligan has backed the 20-year-old to be able to make the step up to regular first-team football.

He said: “When you’re looking at Cody, I can completely understand why he’s unhappy, and I can completely understand when you look at the calibre of clubs – Borussia Dortmund; Newcastle, whose project is just going to be getting bigger and bigger.

“They might see him as a contingency plan for Kieran Trippier – I mean, what a step up that is, because he’s third on the list for Leeds behind Luke Ayling.

“Trippier’s obviously getting a little bit older now, would he rotate a little bit with Cody Drameh, maybe more of a ‘pathway’ for Cody Drameh into that Newcastle side?”

TIF Thoughts on McGilligan’s comments…

Trippier’s return to the Premier League earlier this year has been nothing short of sensational, with the 32-year-old returning three goals and three assists in the Toon’s rise to the top end of the table.

Meanwhile, Drameh has struggled for game time this season since his impressive loan stint with Cardiff City last season, which saw him awarded the Bluebirds’ Player of the Season award – despite only joining in January.

With Emil Krafth suffering from a serious injury, it has left Howe’s options at right-back depleted, so we do wonder whether adding someone of Drameh’s potential could be the ideal signing by allowing him to develop under Trippier.
