CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that Amazon feel Manchester United’s asking price is “way off” amid a potential purchase.

It was announced this week that the Glazer family were prepared “to explore strategic alternatives for the club” and were considering a sale.

£5bn has been touted as the figure it would take to buy the English giants and The Times (via The Independent) have listed tech giants Amazon amid the potential candidates to take over.

However, speaking on The Done Deal Show Jacobs has said:

(20:13) “One thing I want to add on all of this is that talking to people close to Amazon, and also other investor groups, every single one says the same thing and I think this is really crucial, that the price being quoted is way off.

“So if it turns into a bidding war, that’s one thing and if the Glazers allegedly want £8bn, that’s another, but that’s never been my understanding.

“First of all, what you do is you set a price, that’s not a sale price, but it’s a yardstick price. and that yardstick price is a market valuation that can be assessed comparative to the Chelsea price, £2.3bn, all the way up to a prospective valuation of Manchester United now or in the future.”

TIF Thoughts on Jacobs’ comments…

Will Manchester United find new owners in 2023?

Yes

Yes

No

No

With BBC Sport suggesting that another potential buyer Sir Jim Ratcliffe wouldn’t be able to secure a takeover on his own and now Jacobs’ claims it is clear to see that this won’t exactly be a straightforward sale for the Glazers.

That is despite the Manchester United Supporters Trust urging the Glazers to secure a quick transition of ownership.

The ‘yardstick price’ is evidently proving to be beyond what suitors are prepared to paid and this situation could take time to develop.
