Pundit Noel Whelan has claimed that Liverpool will be trying to do ‘everything’ possible to land Mason Mount amid contract doubt over the midfielder.

The England star will no doubt be fully focused on the 2022 World Cup as he aims for glory in Qatar this winter with Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions.

However, back in England, Chelsea may well be concerned about Mount’s future as talks about a new deal have been ‘put on hold’ until after the international tournament, according to The Guardian.

The same report notes that Liverpool and Juventus are keeping a close eye on the situation and Whelan has tipped the Premier League club to try and ‘tempt’ the midfielder into a controversial switch.

He told Football Insider: “Mount has come through at Chelsea, he loves the club.

“I’m sure if he can get a deal done, he’ll stay in London and pledge his future to Chelsea.

“But if they can’t come to that agreement, it will be very strange. He’s a quality midfield player, one of the best we have in the country. He commands whatever wage he is asking for, as far as I’m concerned.

“It would be fantastic for Liverpool fans to see him there; I think even Man City would be glad to have his services.

“It would be an exciting move if it does come off, he’d fit in very well to that ageing midfield.

“Liverpool have got to freshen things up in that midfield, so they’ll be doing everything they can to try and tempt him away.”

TIF thoughts on Mason Mount and Liverpool…

Over the past season or so, much has been made about Liverpool needing to sign a new midfielder – with Jurgen Klopp even admitting as much during the past summer.

Arthur Melo was signed to try and help solve that issue, but this was only a loan deal and injury has prevented him from making any kind of an impact so far in England.

With that in mind, it seems likely that Mount could be a target. After all, despite still being just 23 years of age, the Chelsea man has proven his quality at the highest level having won the Champions League.

It would be a shock if the Englishman did make such a controversial transfer but it’s no surprise to hear that Liverpool could be interested in trying to get a deal sorted.
