Presenter Conor McGilligan has dismissed the idea that Chris Wood could come in and be a good option for Leeds United in the January transfer market.
It’s no secret that the Whites have had their eye on a new forward in recent times. Indeed, over the summer, they tried to land PSV ace Cody Gakpo and also failed with a move for Marseille forward Bamba Dieng on deadline day.
To make things worse, key striker Patrick Bamford has struggled this season and is yet to score a single Premier League goal, having only managed two last term for Leeds.
While speaking about replacing the Englishman on the One Leeds Fan Channel, McGilligan maintained Newcastle United player and former Leeds man Wood wouldn’t be a much better option this January, anyway.
McGilligan was asked whether he would entertain the idea of Wood returning to Elland Road, to which he replied: “I guess the thing is as well with Chris Wood is the fact that he’s just getting no game time at the minute.
“And I guess if he’s coming into a Leeds United side without that much game time – we’re all talking about Bamford being rusty – is Chris Wood going to come in and hit those dizzy heights?”

If Leeds really do want a striker this January, Wood certainly could be on the market. Indeed, The Athletic recently revealed that Newcastle were willing to discuss the possibility of using him as a makeweight in their attempts to sign Joao Pedro from Watford in the summer.
With that in mind, if the right offer did come in from the Whites this winter, the New Zealand international, who scored 44 times for Leeds, would surely be allowed to leave the Magpies.
Still, as McGilligan explains, if rustiness is an issue for Bamford, it could be just as much of a problem for Wood. The Newcastle man has played just 144 minutes in the league this season across 12 outings, scoring zero goals.
The Leeds forward has at least got more minutes under his belt, with 427 minutes spread across 10 appearances. He hasn’t scored either, but at least has one assist.
All in all, it’s not hard to think that the club could do better than both options if they play their cards right in the upcoming market.
