Presenter Conor McGilligan said it would be ‘staggering’ if Leeds United were able to sign Charles De Ketelaere in the winter window.

Over the summer transfer market, the Premier League club were heavily linked with the Belgian. In the end, though, he opted for a move to Serie A champions Milan instead.

Since that transfer, however, things have not gone too well for De Ketelaere, which has led to recent rumours suggesting he could be a target for Leeds in January.

Indeed, according to TEAMtalk, the Whites ‘remain on his trail’ and have asked Milan to let them know if there is any chance of a deal being struck up.

Amid all this talk, while speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, McGilligan asserted that such rumours are ‘baffling’ and unrealistic.

He said: “It’s realism, isn’t it, for this January window? And we’ve seen it already, the Charles De Ketelaere stuff – because he’s not started well at AC Milan – which I find baffling if they are actually to get [rid of him]. I mean, that would just be staggering.”

TIF Thoughts on Charles De Ketelaere and Leeds United…

With just one assist in his first 18 outings across all competitions for the Italian club, it’s not hard to see why some may have their doubts about De Ketelaere coming good at Milan.

However, they did spend around £30m on the midfielder, so it would be a shock if they were to give up on him so soon. Sadly, he hasn’t been able to shine for Belgium at the World Cup, either – playing just 15 minutes of football so far, which came in the 2-0 defeat to Morocco.

Despite it all, it’s hard not to side with McGilligan. It seems pretty fanciful to think Leeds would have any chance of signing De Ketelaere this winter.

Perhaps, though, if he can find any form in the coming months, a summer move could be a more realistic proposition.
