Journalist Greg O’Keeffe has questioned whether Frank Lampard and Everton will be regretting their decision not to sell Anthony Gordon during the summer.

Gordon, who only made his mark on the Premier League last season under Rafael Benitez before continuing his form under current boss Lampard, was the subject of transfer interest from multiple Premier League clubs.

The likes of Chelsea and Newcastle United reportedly put in bids for the winger, with a big-money offer arriving from the Blues, which was said to be around £60m.

That offer that was rejected out of hand by the Toffees, however, that is now looking like a rather poor decision given Gordon’s underwhelming form this season, with just three goals and zero assists to his name in 2022/23.

O’Keeffe has now raised the question about the summer decision while speaking on the All Together Now podcast.

The journalist said: “A penny for his thoughts on his decision to hold firm on Anthony Gordon. I’m sure he wouldn’t talk about regret at the moment and he’ll be looking at it in the long term.

Has Gordon flopped this season?

Yes!

No!

“But he’ll probably be [aware], if he didn’t already know, that Anthony Gordon’s form earlier in the season would be unlikely to be something he could produce all season, so you can’t hang your hat on a 21-year-old.”

TIF Thoughts on Anthony Gordon…

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and at the time of Chelsea’s interest in Gordon, Everton would’ve only had a few days to replace the winger, and with him coming through their academy, it’s no shock that Lampard and the club were reluctant to lose him, especially in case he turned out to be another Wayne Rooney.

However, the chances of an offer anywhere near £60m or perhaps even half of that coming in for Gordon now are likely to be very slim given his poor form, and the fact he’s now got more bookings than goal involvements is a further sign that he has failed to kick on since the speculation over the summer.

It could well be the pressure of being an Evertonian and having to provide when the rest of the team are also struggling for consistency in the final third that’s weighing Gordon down, but Lampard will just be hoping that his maverick winger can rediscover his form from last season.
