The Toffees had appeared to have found the right man to guide them forward in Lampard after he kept them in the league last season, while he saw positive signs early on in the current campaign as they went on a six-game unbeaten run.
However, they have recently lost back-to-back games against Bournemouth by an aggregate scoreline of 7-1, with tempers seemingly reaching boiling point on Saturday when Evertonians threw Alex Iwobi’s shirt back at the midfielder after the game.
Despite the recent run of poor form, King has claimed that the Everton board can’t keep sacking a manager whenever things go slightly pear-shaped.
He said: “This has been one of the problems that Everton have had over the years – as soon as there’s been ricks in the road, they’ve been ready to pull the trigger, and it can’t keep continuing.”
Should Lampard be sacked?
TIF Thoughts on Lampard’s future…
It is starting to look rather bleak for Lampard, with Everton having won just once in their last eight games across all competitions, although the winter break couldn’t have come at a better time given they also have constant worries over the fitness of key man Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Lampard will know that he needs to get more from his team as they had boasted the tightest defence in the Premier League not long ago, but they have now conceded seven goals in less than a week, which hasn’t helped their cause.
This is because when their defence looked good, it made their goalscoring woes less of an issue as they could steal points in tight games, however, when they are shipping goals freely, they need their attackers to stand up and be counted for, which certainly isn’t happening.
