Anthony Gordon was labelled as the ‘best player on the pitch’ as Everton won 5-1 in a friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers.

Joe Thomas for the Liverpool Echo, gave a ‘9’ rating to the Toffees man, who netted a hat-trick against the A-League side.

The winger has 3 goals to his name this season for Everton. However, it’s been a tough 2022/23 campaign, Frank Lampard’s side sit just out side the bottom three in 17th place.

Goals have been a real issue for the Toffees this season. Only 3 Premier League clubs have scored less than Everton’s tally of 12 this season.

Here’s what Thomas had to say Gordon’s performance, ‘Anthony Gordon 9

‘Hat-trick hero and the best player on the pitch. A cheeky flick for his first, a poacher’s finish for his second – which came from a move he started – and saved the best for his third.’

TIF’s view on Thomas’ comments…

We believe that Gordon’s will give him a confidence boost ahead of Everton’s Premier League return against Wolves on Boxing Day.

It is only a friendly, but confidence is often a massive part of the game. Considering where the Toffees are in the league, they’ll need their squad filled with confidence before the January transfer window.

Gordon is only a goal off his tally from last season, but you feel that Everton have to strengthen in January. They’ve been linked with the likes of Armando Broja and Luke Shaw.

It’s clear that Lampard needs to bring in someone who can find the net. A proven goal scorer could help them pull further away from the relegation zone

Lampard will be encouraged by Anthony Gordon’s hat-trick. Based on the club’s Sofascore ratings, the winger is not in Everton’s top ten performers this season. So, he’ll hope this performance is the beginning of an exciting second-half of the season for Gordon.
