Aston Villa: Language barrier may cause problems for Unai Emery

|

Football analyst JJ Bull has speculated that Unai Emery’s trouble speaking English could be an issue at Aston Villa.

The Spanish coach arrived at Bodymoor Heath this week to begin his tenure as manager of the Villans.

Emery arrives following a successful spell at Villarreal that saw them win the 2020/21 Europa League before reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League last season.

It is of course a return to the Premier League for the 50-year-old coach having been sacked by Arsenal almost three years ago.

Now Bull has raised concerns over Emery’s ability to coach outside of Spain.

As posted on Tifo’s YouTube channel JJ said:

(4:03)”I wonder like the reason he does so well in Spain as opposed to when he goes to places abroad is communication because that seems to be one of the big problems when he was at Arsenal and exemplified by people mocking the way he would do press conferences but I remember him being quite difficult sometimes.

“If you can’t communicate your ideas completely across to a group of players that’s very complicated.”

TIF Thoughts on JJ’s comments…

Will Emery be a success at Villa?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

It certainly is a fair argument to make considering the Spaniard did also struggle at Spartak Moscow and was sacked after five months while also failing to meet PSG’s ambitions in France.

However, in his only full season at the Emirates Stadium Emery did lead the Gunners to a fifth-place finish, just one point off a Champions League place.

Considering Mikel Arteta then finished eighth in successive campaigns you could argue that the former Sevilla boss would ultimately have delivered like Arteta has.

Furthermore, speaking on the BBC’s Football News Show (11:04) Spanish football expert Alvaro Romeo admitted that although language may have been an ‘issue’ for the four-time Europa League winner he has since been working on his English and is “to take over this job and do much better than he did at Arsenal” which bodes well for Villa.
