Aston Villa: Diego Carlos return would be massive claims journalist

|

Journalist Pete O’Rourke believes that Aston Villa would be receiving a ‘huge boost’ if Diego Carlos was able to return before the end of the season.

Carlos arrived for £26m in the summer but he was quickly ruled out with a serious injury.

He ruptured his Achilles tendon during the Villans’ first home game of the campaign back in August and required surgery with it suspected that he wouldn’t play again this term.

However, former coach Steven Gerrard revealed in October that he could still well feature in a ‘big chunk’ of the campaign.

When asked by This is Futbol how important it would be to see Carlos before the end of the season O’Rourke replied: “It would be a huge boost. He’s been a big miss for Aston Villa. I think his injury was a contributing factor to Villa’s poor form at the start of the season.

“He was such a big, marquee signing for the club in the summer. They beat a number of top clubs to his signature so to lose him so early to a serious injury was a blow to Aston Villa.”

The 29-year-old was part of the Brazilian side that won a gold medal at the Olympics last summer and arrived with vast experience at the highest level.

He arrived having made 230 appearances in three of Europe’s top seven leagues and 25 times in European competitions.

He played a key role as Sevilla held La Liga’s best defensive record last season ranking first among his teammates for clearances per game (WhoScored).

Villa supporters will be hoping his injury doesn’t affect his ability and quickness across the ground and having him back for the closing stages of the season could be vital with the club potentially fighting in the top half of the table.
